Dear Friends/Customers, Family and Neighbors,
This year has been a successful but challenging year due to our very unusual weather. The record warm temperatures in March gave the trees a “jump start” energizing the fruit and causing budding much earlier than normal. This surge was suddenly capped by the unseasonable hard freeze spells that hit in late April. Along with this, we experienced an atypical summer season. These weather extremes brought about nearly 85% of our crop loss as well as most other Michigan orchards.
Nevertheless, even with a very limited supply of apples, along with a small quantity of supplements to meet customer needs, we did enjoy a satisfactory, rewarding year. We were able to provide cider throughout the apple season.
On Saturday, October 6, we had our annual “Apple Butter Day” and craft day as we “stirred the pot” and endured the cold weather while standing around the fire. We had a very good turn out and enjoyed the fellowship that others brought to the event. Many volunteers showed up to take part in the canning process and more. Our pumpkin patch was very minimal this year – also due to the weather, BUT we plan to have a large increase in 2013.
We have enjoyed and appreciated how friendly and supportive all of our customers have been during this most unusual season. Our newest family member, Bailee, our female cockapoo puppy also enjoyed seeing everyone and appreciated the hugs bestowed upon her before customers entered the shop. (She will grow much over the winter!)
We anticipate a great year in 2013 and hope you will find the time to visit our orchard as we look forward to seeing each of you. You are the reason we are here and we are excited and happy to see you and serve you at our orchard. We wish you a blessed year as we begin our pruning season.
Thanks for a memorable year and we will plan to see you in 2013 – right after Labor Day!
